What does the Chaos licensing model look like?
For all V-Ray products from manufacturer Chaos, there is currently a licensing model that consists of 3 different levels:
Chaos V-Ray Solo - Named license with access to V-Ray, Veras, Chaos Cloud, Chaos Collaboration and Chaos Cosmos Basic on all available 3D applications;
Chaos V-Ray Premium - Floating license with access to V-Ray, Veras, Chaos Cloud, Chaos Collaboration and Chaos Cosmos Premium on all available 3D applications, plus Chaos Phoenix for 3DSMax and Maya.
Chaos V-Ray Collection - Floating or Named license with access to V-Ray, Veras, Chaos Cloud, Chaos Collaboration and Chaos Cosmos Collection on all available 3D applications, plus Chaos Phoenix for 3DSMax and Maya. With this license, you also get Chaos Vantage, which allows you to render lightning fast.
The number of Chaos Credits you receive with your package also varies per level. Check our product page for the exact numbers and prices. You can purchase these products for one year or for three years.
Not sure yet which tier you want to purchase? You can always start at the lowest and decide to upgrade later. When upgrading, the price difference is calculated for the remainder of the license term. There are upgrades from Solo to Premium, from Solo to Collection, from Premium to Collection, and from Collection Personal to Collection Floating.
What is the difference between a Floating and a Named license?
A floating license can be used by anyone in your company. This concerns concurrent use. This way, many people can make use of a limited number of licenses. This license type is suitable for larger companies and for companies where people use the licenses sporadically or irregularly. Because multiple people can use it, the price is higher than a personal license.
A personal license, on the other hand, may only be used by one person. This license type is suitable if you like to use V-Ray daily, or if you are the only person in your company who uses V-Ray.
Perpetual licenses
In the past, a perpetual license was the standard. This type of license is no longer sold to new customers, but existing customers with perpetual licenses can still upgrade to a new version. If you were to purchase an upgrade for every version, it would be more expensive than getting a subscription.
You can choose to switch from a perpetual license to a subscription. In that case, you will also receive a discount. Exactly how much discount depends on which version you are upgrading from; request a quote from your reseller!
V-Ray in SketchUp Studio
SketchUp Studio only includes V-Ray for SketchUp; you get no access to V-Ray for 3DSMax/Revit/Rhino.
You also get no access to Chaos Veras.
The Cosmos library is available, but you only get the basic models, just like with a solo license.
Your V-Ray license within SketchUp Studio is a named license, just like your SketchUp license.
I only want to use V-Ray in SketchUp. Is it better to buy SketchUp Studio?
That depends:
- Do you want to be able to use Vantage, and have extensive access to Cosmos assets? Then choose a separate V-Ray Collection license.
- If you don't find Vantage interesting, but you are interested in Scan Essentials and the Revit importer, then it's better to choose SketchUp Studio.
- Do you want to be able to use Veras? You can choose SketchUp Studio + Veras separately or SketchUp Pro + V-Ray Solo/Premium/Collection. In all cases, pay special attention to the total number of Chaos Credits you receive per month. If necessary, you can also purchase an additional Credit Pack or Credit Pool if you feel the number of credits is insufficient.
